Family Fun for Christmas will help you to share the meaning of Advent and Christmas with your children in thirty 'family moments', to explore faith in the home, and to have lots of fun together in the process! The activities are structured to take the family through the season of Advent to Christmas Day and on into the New Year.

From the Introduction

For Christians, Advent is the time of preparation for Christmas in the same way that Lent is the preparation for Easter. Within Advent we find the accounts of the Angel Gabriel appearing to Zechariah to announce the gift of their son John, and to Mary to announce the gift of Jesus, the journey to Bethlehem, the search for a birthplace and other events leading up to the birth of Jesus. Going beyond Christmas itself, we move into Epiphany, celebrated in January, which marks the arrival of the wise men or Magi bringing gifts to Jesus.

Throughout this book there are ways to learn more, have fun and celebrate this Christian season together as a family in your home. Whether you prefer cookery, craft, construction, challenges or chatting, there are activities involving all of these for all ages.

The ideas can be used as best suits your family. You may choose to do something each week at a set family time together or dip into the book at various times during the week - the choice is yours.

No matter how much excellent work is done in church services and activities, unless that is followed up at home, most of our Christian message may be quickly forgotten. Jane Butcher's little book Family Fun for Christmas has 30 simple ideas for crafts, cooking, and games that connect the season with the Christian story. Some of the activities introduce Christmas traditions from other countries, which may be particularly appropriate for those who have family and friends living abroad.

For years, our family has used a similar but dated booklet, which links the Christian story with the secular festivities associated with Christmas. This book will engage a new generation of families who want to make the season come alive at home.
