Lucy Moore
Lucy Moore is a professional actor and storyteller. Based in the south of England she is an experienced speaker, workshop leader and performer. Lucy co-leads the Barnabas RE Day Team. With a special interest in drama and storytelling, all-age church and collective worship in schools, her work takes her into schools and churches across the region and beyond. She is a member of Equity, an accredited Godly Play teacher, is part of the Children’s Advisory Group for Portsmouth Diocese, on the leadership team of Messy Church and is an Associate Missioner for Fresh Expressions. Lucy enjoys both performance work and helping all those working in schools and churches to explore creative and appropriate ways of opening up the Bible with children through enjoyable hands-on training with plenty of opportunity for discussion and reflection.
After training and working as a teacher, Lucy combined working as Drama Advisor for the Diocese of Bradford with youth and children’s work in her local churches. Moving to the south, she worked freelance for BRF as a performer in schools before taking up her present post and combining it with writing. Her published work includes
The Gospels Unplugged—the Gospel stories in verse and script form;
Topsy Turvy Christmas—a Christmas musical for children,
The Lord’s Prayer Unplugged—a programme of sessions exploring the Lord’s Prayer through drama, craft, prayer and games; and
Messy Church—working with people on the edge of church life through a programme of all-age Bible-based activities.
Lucy is available to train leaders and work with children primarily in the following geographical areas:

- Dorset, Wiltshire and the Diocese of Salisbury
- Hampshire and the Dioceses of Winchester and Portsmouth
- Surrey and the Diocese of Guildford
- West and East Sussex and the Diocese of Chichester
Martyn Payne
Based in east London, Martyn is available to respond to
Barnabas bookings across the UK. He taught in London for 18 years and then for eight years was the National Children’s Work Co-ordinator for CMS (Church Mission Society). During this time he worked with a wide cross section of churches both in this country and overseas, training leaders in children’s work and leading special events with children. In 2003 Martyn joined BRF’s
Barnabas Team. Martyn has produced a wide range of materials about contemporary expressions of Christianity around the world, as well as articles and worship material for
Together with Children and
Roots magazines. In 2004
Barnabas published
A-cross the World, which has proved a popular and widely used resource in churches and schools. Martyn has also written
Footsteps to the Feast, published in 2007. This contains comprehensive resources for running twelve special children’s days linked to the major festivals of the church’s year. Martyn has experience of training in a number of areas, including children’s spirituality, storytelling the Bible, reaching children on the fringes, worship with children present and he is also an accredited teacher of Godly Play. He has contributed to education courses for ministers in training and led many children’s activity days, holiday clubs and workshops in schools. He has experience in the planning and leading of festivals and special events. Martyn’s workshops are lively and interactive, enabling adults and children to step into and explore the Christian story, bringing the Bible alive through a variety of storytelling methods. In addition, Martyn has co-ordinated the children’s work and leads worship at his own local church for over 20 years and continues to do so. As part of the
Barnabas Team, he is responsible for co-ordinating, updating and writing material for the barnabasinschools website.
Jane Butcher
Jane Butcher was born in Denver, USA, but grew up and was educated in the UK, spending most of her childhood actively involved in sport. She trained as a secondary school teacher and taught P.E. and R.E. in a city secondary school. Having also trained as a youth worker, she moved into full-time church-based children’s and youth work in 1993. Over the next ten years, her posts included Children’s Worker at a church in Michigan, USA, and for the past 6 years the Children’s Worker at St. John’s Church, Harborne, Birmingham. Jane joined the
Barnabas team in September 2007.
Chris Hudson
Chris Hudson joined the
Barnabas team in 2007 and works exclusively in the North East of England. He is a prolific author, writing for
Barnabas, other book publishers and websites, and an experienced teacher dedicated to promoting high quality teaching and learning in Primary Schools. His particular interest lies in using music, storytelling and drama to help children explore the Bible and Christian faith. He wants to inspire and equip teachers both to teach RE enjoyably and to lead collective worship effectively, making relevant links across the curriculum with children’s everyday experience. He has been involved in children’s work and leading worship in a variety of churches.
Margaret Withers
Margaret Withers became a Diocesan Children's Adviser in 1989. She was the Archbishop's Officer for Evangelism among Children from 2001-6, providing encouragement, training and information for churches wishing to develop their outreach among children. She is now an associate of the
Barnabas team, specialising in worship, mission and midweek church.
Sue Doggett
Sue Doggett is Commissioning Editor for
Barnabas. Her role involves the commissioning and project management of all books for children aged 3-11. Sue is an accredited Godly Play trainer, and this is the main focus of her involvement in the Barnabas Ministry Team. In addition Sue provides consultancy and advice in developing training programmes for those working with children in church.

The Barnabas RE Day Team team includes professional dancers, storytellers, actors and authors. All have extensive experience of working in schools and offer a combination of performances and workshops for Barnabas RE Day bookings.

Barnabas authors have professional experience in working with children, either as class teachers or assistants, or as church-based children’s leaders, and BRF is increasingly involving many of them in the Barnabas Ministry team to run workshops and input training events. The range of experience that they bring enables us to draw on a wider diversity of expertise to meet your requirements for training, entertaining and quiet spaces within primary education and the local church. |
