Jan Godfrey is an experienced writer for children under seven years old, with many published books to her name. She was formerly a school teacher and has recently retired to Dorset with her husband, who is a Church of England clergyman.

I think that this is the book I have been waiting for!

This A4 hard-backed book traces the Easter journey through the eyes of Ben, a little Jewish lad (wearing a kippa). In each double page Ben sees one of the events of Holy Week and beyond, starting with the untying of the Palm Sunday colt, through Good Friday and Easter Sunday, and ending with the journey on the Emmaus road.

The writing is simple enough to be read to Infants and straightforward enough to use with Upper Juniors (as long as they recognise that the simplicity of the writing contributes to its effectiveness). The phrases 'Ben looked and listened, he listened and he looked,' appear on each double page giving the book an edge as a storyteller's book.

Each page is attractive and colourfully illustrated, the drawings being quite childlike in their simplicity - no graphic blood or pain is found here.

I will enjoy using this book as a simply written springboard for more detailed study of the events of Holy Week and Easter. Reading a page or two a day with my class will help to keep the story ordered in their minds - no mean feat when there are number of key events on this most important of journeys.

The price tag of GBP5.99 makes this excellent resource eminently affordable.

THE mysteries of Easter are offered to the youngest members of the Church family by the Barnabas imprint of the Bible Reading Fellowship (brf) in two guises. The Road to Easter Day, by Jan Godfrey and Marcin Piwowarski (hardback, GBP5.99) adopts a format which is often used in telling the Christmas story - that of a young observer with whom the readership can identify. In this case it is Ben, who is present at all the events, from preparations for Palm Sunday onwards until he is lucky enough to see the encounter on the road to Emmaus, and whose story is told with the repetitive phrases so enjoyed by the littlest listeners and an easily-absorbed, vividly illustrated segment clearly expressed on each pair of pages.

Review from www.wordpool.co.uk - February 2008 Starting with the events of Palm Sunday, this picture book tells the whole Easter story up to and including the post-resurrection meeting with Jesus on the road to Emmaus. The text flows easily with some rhythmical repetition and combine well with the colourful illustrations. To add child appeal, the events are seen through the eyes of a Jewish boy called Ben who can be spotted in all the pictures.
