Running the Race Marked Out for Us
'Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith' Hebrews 12: 1-2 (NIV)
While events such as the London Marathon grow in popularity year after year, with athletes training to beat their 'personal best' and raise money for charity, the general assumption today is that when things get tough, it is much easier to give up than press on through the pain barrier. Perseverance is not a popular idea - but that is exactly what God calls his followers to do, as this book spells out.
In a verse by verse exploration of one of the New Testament's most inspiring passages, this book invites us on the challenge of a lifetime - the race of faith, which we run in the company of a 'cloud of witnesses' who urge us on as we follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Based around a nine week discipleship course at Ashburnham Place used to train Christians from around the world, this book includes questions for group discussion.
Running the Race Marked out for us reveals a wealth of encouragement and hope in Hebrews 12, and reminds us of all that we are called to do and be, as sons and daughters of God, especially when our path seems littered with obstacles.
'This book will strengthen your understanding and faith so you will not look back, but press on, and grasp the prize that the Lord has set before you.'
Julie Anderson, Prayer for the Nations
'This fresh, helpful and Christ centred work will get you thinking and be of immense help in daily Christian living. I warmly commend it!'

The author is the Director of a Christian conference and prayer centre, and this is a discipleship course based on Hebrews 12, that he has developed and uses to great effect with his staff. The strength of the material lies clearly in its use as a communal tool, and I felt it lost something when approached purely as a 'how to' book for the individual, but useful group study material is included as an appendix. The race theme is particularly pertinent in the run-up to the 2012 London Olympics, and this would make a timely 're-commissioning' course for churches and house groups.
