Content

This Man Called Jesus follows the story of Easter from Palm Sunday through to Easter Day. The material has been written especially for Key Stage 2 Year Groups and was devised and developed with a Year 4 class in the half term leading up to Easter.

The material is divided into four sections.

  • Section One contains all the information for the production itself.
  • Section Two contains links to other curriculum subjects.
  • Section Three links the material to the National Framework for RE.
  • Section Four contains the full script of the play.

Finally, there is an appendix containing sheet music and wordsheets for the songs.

The play can be approached as a single performance, or the scenes may be divided up and performed by different classes on the same day or over a week. It is also possible to take just one particular scene and perform it in isolation. Minimum cast list is for 24 characters, with varying levels of acting and speaking ability, but other children can be incorporated into the production as disciples, crowds, Pharisees, singers and musicians. The material would also be suitable for use in a church situation, especially with midweek groups.

An accompanying CD of all six songs, with a performance version and a backing track, is also available.

From RE Today - Autumn 2006 This Man called Jesus is an easy-to-run Easter play complete with music and cross-curricular project work from the inspirational pen of composer Eleanor Jeans. The material is divided into four sections. Section one contains all the information for the production itself which can be put together in six weeks. Section two contains links to other curriculum subjects such as music and drama. Section three links the material to the NSNFRE (non-statutory national framework for RE) with ideas that cover 'learning about religion' and 'learning from religion'. Section four contains the full script of the play. Words and sheet music complete the book. There is photocopy permission for this material which has been tried and tested in a Manchester school. I would like to have seen the accompanying CD as part of this package. It can be obtained direct from the author. I do read music, but still would have found it helpful to listen to the CD. Those schools who don't have the luxury of a pianist would find the CD a valuable tool for teaching the song. Nonetheless, the book is packed full of ideas and practical information, rooted in the biblical references for each part of the Passion narrative. I really liked the rehearsal diary, which could be used as a refreshing method of pupils' self-assessment. Pupils are encouraged to keep a diary to be filled in after each session. This records what the children are thinking and feeling as well as what they have learnt and enjoyed or indeed found difficult. I hope schools will try this new Easter play - I for one would like to see it being performed. A refreshing new Easter play which is ideal for KS2. Recommended! Reviewed by Lizzie McWhirter
