Stories to Read Aloud
The pick-up-and-use formula is ideal for assemblies and RE in schools, but equally accessible for church-based worship and teaching.
Each story is accompanied by its Bible reference, with the key verse written in full and a 'jigsaw piece' giving information on how the story fits into the overall picture.
To help teachers using the material, there is also a summary of the theme of the story, suggestions for discussion and learning outcomes, a simple activity to introduce the story, a 'jigsaw puzzled' section posing pertinent questions aimed to resonate with the child's experience, and a closing prayer to summarize and conclude the session.
From: RE News - Autumn 2005
This is a really useful resource for collective worship with 6 to 10 year olds. In total 50 biblical stories are retold - 21 stories from the Old Testament and the rest from the New Testament (the four gospels and Acts). The resource can simply be picked up and used, without much preparation required. There is a clear page of teachers' information before the retelling of the story itself. Using very few sentences, a theme for the story is identified and an aim. There is also a suggestions for discussion, an activity, and a prayer.
From Families Together - Spring 2005
Ideal for six to 10-year-olds, {Stories to Read Aloud} contains 50 'easy-listening' Bible stories for assemblies, RE and all-age worship. Each story is accompanied by its Bible reference, a suggested talking-point and prayer, and a jigsaw piece explaining how it fits in the overall story of the Bible.
From Methodist Recorder - January 2005
Aimed at the six - ten age group, the book includes stories from both the Old and New Testaments. 'It's all lies' tells the story of the Garden of Eden and the material for teachers focuses on deceiving and sets out the aim to look to God for what is true.
Another suitable story for these times of 'keeping up with the Joneses' is 'Nice Coat!' which features the story of Joseph and his technicolour coat; the teaching material focuses on 'The destructiveness of jealousy'.
