The Gifts of Baptism

A child is going to be baptized. Through baptism we become members of God's family, the Church. Preparing to take part in this great event will include exploring some of the things that make up the baptismal service. You may be the child's parent, or you may be a godparent or sponsor. Perhaps you are a church leader looking for material to use as a preparation course for a group of parents. Or you may be talking to children who are going to be present at a baptism.

This book takes you through the service by following the journey of a young child and his baby sister as they prepare to be baptized. Each chapter introduces and discusses the signs and symbols used, alongside some of the text and prayers. It also uses short extracts from the Bible to describe the ways that people have seen themselves as belonging to God, their creator, and the new life that Jesus promises to all who follow him.

Each chapter links progressively into the baptism service by exploring:

3. The gift of the cross (Signing with the cross)
4. The gift of water (Prayer over the water)
5. The gift of faith (Profession of faith)
6. The gift of new life (Baptism)

Author info

Margaret Withers took up her role as the Archbishop's Officer for Evangelism among Children in June 2001. Formerly Children's Work Adviser for the Diocese of Rochester, she taught in several Inner London schools and for the Open University. Before becoming a Diocesan Children's Adviser, she became heavily involved in providing training and support for voluntary children's leaders in parishes. Her published books included, Fired up... not burned out and Welcome to the Lord's Table, both also published under the Barnabas imprint.
